When Stuck - Open a Book

When I am stuck with a design task or when I am in need of inspiration, I open a book or go to a Museum. I draw my inspiration not only from fashion specific images - sometimes it is an old photograph, an oil painting in a museum, colours or materials of an installation.

At university our guest professors taught us different ways to come to an idea and to develop its full potential.

Vivienne Westwood sharpened our eyes to see proportions, colours and the use of fabric and pattern making through original patterns and oilpaintings and not only the perception or the idea of a style transposed on the current fashion or silhouette. This made our ideas and the garments we created richer: we  found proportion and pattern details new to our current view on fashion and style.

When I open a book or go to a Museum (of any kind), my mind is open to find new inspiration or solution to a technical garment problem.

Old satchels, sleeves, sandals on old tapestries, first photographs of people at work.

Inspiration will always come when I look closely and give myself time to see new things.
